3 Things To Think About When Buying A Fireplace

by Perry Chapman

A fireplace can give your home a lovely ambiance, let you heat an area, and give you hours of enjoyment. If you buy a fireplace to install in your home, you may not be sure which one to choose. After all, fireplaces come in many varieties, and trying to pin down what you want can take some time and some work. However, there are some things you can consider when you are looking at various options.

Installation Process

One of the things to consider is the installation process and how long it will take to install the fireplace. An electric fireplace will have different installation needs than a wood fireplace. A wood fireplace must have a way to smoke out of your house. So the installation for that will need to either connect to an existing chimney or have some stove pipe connected to the outside. That is not something electric fireplace because an electric fireplace does not create actual fire.

Fuel Source

Thinking about the fuel source and the installation process goes hand in hand because they influence each other. For example, if you want a gas fireplace, you need to have it installed somewhere where it can have access to a gas source. If you have natural gas lines and natural gas service already in your home, you can put the fireplace in just about any place with enough space and near a gas line. However, if you do not have natural gas service in your home or your area, you have to have a propane tank installed outside of your home so the fireplace can use that as a fuel source. That will limit where you can put the fireplace.

Fireplace Purpose

You should also think about what the purpose of your fireplace is. If you get it to help supplement heating in your home, you will want to look for something larger that will generate plenty of heat. But, if you're going to want to have something that gives you the look of a fireplace and not necessarily all the heat, then an electric fireplace may be the right choice because you can choose to have the faux flames without the heat.
